Week 1
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
The best piece of advice I've ever received was from my grandfather. He is a retired Colonel and he is a very well known and respected man in the Philippines. Whenever I am down and whenever he sees me stressed out about social problems, family problems or mostly academic problems, he always tells me that every problem has a solution. He tells me that in his times that he has encountered far more serious problems that had put lives on the line. He said that he would just pray to God and that he'd resolved his problems. He always tells me to just ask for guidance from God and have faith in him because the Lord God will never abandon his children. My grandfather is a very religious and positive man. He always gives me a lot of advice and he just tells me to never give up. He has given me a lot of advice that have gotten me through really hard problems in my life, but the advice that he gave me that has stuck in to me was "every problem has a solution". Another advice that my grandfather gave me that helps me get through the hard days is that "the only permanent thing in the world is change." He tells me that change is a very good thing and it is a part of being human and growing up.
Week 2
What would happen if you threw a piece of trash on the ground? What if everyone did?
If I threw a piece of trash on the ground, the piece of trash could be picked up by other students because we usually do emu bobs here at St. Mary's. The piece of trash could be blown away by the wind and end up in people's gardens and houses. It could also end up in the ocean and be mistaken by turtles, fish , dolphins and ducks as food. They might die from suffocation or poisoning. The most cause of animals being endangered is the destruction of habitat. If everyone threw trash on the ground, there would be a bigger environmental impact. Rubbish would be everywhere and it would end up in the animal's habitats and kill wildlife faster. Our planet and it's inhabitants are already suffering lethal consequences because of our own actions and decisions. We, humans are the major cause of Global warming. Our environment, animals and plants are suffering because of human activity. People around the world should be educated and informed about the effects and impacts of human activity and common mistakes we make, do to our planet.
Week 3
What would you do if you saw a friend cheating - report it, confront the friend or nothing - and why? What do you think courage means? What do you think makes a good friend?
If I saw a friend cheating I would be very annoyed because there are a lot of people who actually study and do their work. These people give their best and the people that cheat make me upset. It is unjust for the people that cheat to pass, I believe that when people are caught cheating they should suffer the consenquences because it is unfair for them to just get away with it. I think I would just confront that friend and constructively tell them that it is bad and they shouldn't do it again. I wouldn't really dob on them if it was school work because I would be too scared that they'll physically or emotionally hurt me but if it was something that was really severe such as cheating on their girlfriend/boyfriend or using physical violence to get someone to do their home work I would tell a teacher or an adult.
I think courage is a quality that is found in a person that enables them to encounter dangers without fear or doubt. From my perspective I think that a good friend should be smart, easy to get along with, adventurous and nice. A friend who likes reading books and who likes anime would be a really great friend to have. So far I have 2 best friend who likes Death Note, One Piece and a lot of anime.
Week 4
What is your most indispensable possession and why?
My most indispensable possession would probably be my brain. Yes, at first it may seem like a "duh" statement because without our brains we wouldn't exist therefore its everyone's indispensable possession. By "brain" what I mean is logic. I know it may seem that I am up myself but I cannot imagine myself not trying my hardest at school. I would be nothing if I didn't try my best and finish my work on time. As someone said in class I was their living dictionary and calculator, firstly I thought it was a bad thing but when I thought about it I began taking it as a complement. It's great that people can classify me as something rather than nothing. If I were to be a slack and be a trouble maker I don't think I would get anywhere in life. I wouldn't be able to pursue my dreams of studying law or maybe study business management. Not being capable of doing my best and not having an innate capacity of knowing through experience wouldn't make me who I am today. I am not the smartest person in the world and I am certainly not like Albert Einstein. I took an IQ test and it told me I had an IQ of 130 and it classified me as "very superior" It is way off from the IQ of the greats in history. People would say I'm the nerd in class, but I really think that it is better than being lazy and failing everything.
Week 5
What do you think about people polluting the environment?
People who pollute the environment are probably uneducated that is why when I am hopefully a successful lawyer I will convince schools from third world countries to have a curriculum that educates people about the environment and how we are the cause of Enhanced Global Warming and the extinction of our flora and fauna just like what we learn here in St. Mary's. Even though people are educated about pollution and the impact of it on our environment they still decide to pollute and contribute to the destruction of our planet. This may be because they are just very lazy and cannot be bothered. They take the resources mother nature has given us for granted and they don't think about the negative impacts of their actions. Plastic bottles take years and years to decompose, yet we have this knowledge we still decide to purchase plastic bottles. Why? because they are convenient and mostly there aren't any alternatives to many plastic products. I get very emotional and upset when I see pictures of turtles and other animals who choke on our rubbish.
Week 6
How do you feel when you do something wrong? How do you feel when you do something that is very good?
When I do something wrong I feel guilty and try to do something to fix things up. I usually try to get the courage to own up or tell the the truth. In some circumstances, if I did something wrong for the good of other people I would try to just stay silent. If I did something wrong to hurt someone or to take revenge on a person that has hurt me deliberately, I would probably feel happy at first but then my conscience would get to me and I would feel extremely guilty and ashamed of myself. As a proud catholic, my grandfather and mother always told me that if I did something wrong or I committed a sin, I would have to go to confession and ask for forgiveness to God and the person/people I have done wrong to. I would try to apologise as soon as possible and make it up to them. I wouldn't want them to feel upset and be sad because in some situations I try to put myself in their shoes and how I would feel if somebody did what I have done to me. If I did something that is very good I would feel really proud of myself and be really happy. Especially if I made somebody very happy and I brightened up their day I would be blissful and joyful.
Week 7
I wish there was a law that said... This would be a good law because...
I wish there was a law that said that smoking whilst pregnant is illegal. This would be a good law because when pregnant women smoke, they expose themselves and their unborn children to numerous health risks. These health risks include: ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, foetal death, problems with the placenta, rupture of the membranes and premature labour. Women who smoke are twice as likely to give birth to a low weight baby compared to non-smokers. Low birth weight babies are more vulnerable to infection, other health problems such as breathing difficulties, death and long-term health problems in adulthood. Some of the negative effects on the foetus are reduced oxygen supply due to carbon monoxide and nicotine, retarded growth and development, increased risk of cleft lip and cleft palate, increased heart rate and disruption of the baby’s breathing movements in the womb due to the effects of nicotine. Seeing as there are so many number of risks, the government should ban it and enforce fines. Women all over the world should be informed about this because who would want to pay for their own child's death?
Week 8
When you are angry, how do you look? When are you happiest? When have you felt lonely? When do you feel proud?
When I am angry, I look really weird. When I am angry my eyebrows frown and my eyes kind of squint. I try to keep quiet when I am angry because I don't want to hurt anyone. My mum said that when I'm angry and I open my mouth it is like a machine gun and I don't stop talking. I somehow try to keep it all inside because I don't want to hurt the people I love, when I've had enough I just burst into tears.
I am the happiest when I've done something right and when I am with the people I love. I have to admit that sometimes I get really moody and when I'm the happiest I can just quickly get angry. This is a really annoying aspect of my personality because I hurt the people around me. I'm the happiest when I'm with my friends and being around my best friends from the telescope class is probably the best part of my school day because they understand me, they get me and don't make fun of me when I want to try really hard at school. I felt really lonely when Trevor and my friends went to community links and camp. It was really hard, though I have Jesse in class it's just not enough because I missed them so much. I feel lonely when the person or the people I love have to go somewhere for a holiday while I'm stuck at home waiting for them to come back. I feel proud when I've set a goal and I've achieved it. I feel really proud when I try really hard with something and I get the marks I have aimed for.
Week 9
Which quality do you dislike most about yourself - laziness, selfishness, childishness - and why?
The quality that I dislike the most about myself is that I can be really lazy and just stay in bed. Sometimes when I need to practice Viola or do homework, I feel so lazy that I just stay in bed and leave it for the next day and then end up having to rush. Sometimes I just need some motivation. I also hate how I am not persistent, when I don't get the marks I've aimed for or I do really bad at something. I just give up. I know that I have to keep doing what I have to do in spite of difficulty but it's really hard because I put in so much effort and so much time when people get higher marks or do better than me. I don't get recognised for how much I try and I get really upset about this. I know it's really bad to be jealous and it is a sin against God but sometimes jealousy can take over me. I always compare myself with my friends and what they have and what I don't. I always ask myself why she has this or why she is so pretty. I know that we should all be happy with what we have but sometimes it's just really hard to believe that someone can have everything.
Week 10
Why do you think prejudice exists in the world?
From my perspective, I think prejudice exists in the world because it is part of being human. We all have our faults because we aren't all perfect. "...The human mind must think with the aid of categories," Allport explained. "Once formed, categories are the basis for normal prejudgment. We cannot possibly avoid this process. Orderly living depends upon it. - Gordon Allport, Psychologist. Being prejudice is usually a negative attitude which cannot be theoretically or scientifically proven. The common features of being prejudice are stereotyped beliefs, negative feelings and discriminating against members of a certain group.
Being prejudice often results with stereotyping and discrimination. I believe that people whom stereotype and discriminate need to be educated and helped with understanding the truth. Some people discriminate and stereotype because they were brought up with it. Their parents, relatives and friends might believe a common stereotype therefore they would most likely believe it too. It also depends on what kind of environment people live in and what they do. I believe the media also puts a big role with being prejudice because when people see something in a magazine, TV or newspaper they automatically think how the producers, editors and authors want them to think like.
